What is LET'S GET YOU PREGNANT!?

LET'S GET YOU PREGNANT! is a research-creation project about assisted reproductive technologies, failure, and the politics of the assigned female body.

The resulting exhibition will be presented at the Galerie de l'UQAM in February 2020.
What is the objective of this exhibition?

The goal of this work is to make visible the experiences of infertile women like me, who have used assisted reproductive technologies without success.

By exposing and rethinking failure - failure of reproductive technology; failure to become mother - I hope to create an artwork that resists the veneration of science, the normative voices of society, and the taboos surrounding infertility.

Who is conducting the research?

I am a cis-woman, heterosexual, middle class, and an immigrant settler. I am a transdisciplinary artist exploring constructions of identity through a feminist and scientific lens. The focus on infertility in my current work is the result of six years of unsuccessful attempts at in vitro fertilization.
Who can participate?

Any woman* who has in vitro fertilization without success. Women of all ages, races and socio-economic conditions are welcome. However, only women who have not become mothers by any means will be considered.

*Assigned woman
**Trans and non-binary people are very welcome, however certain experiences particular to their situation may not be addressed in the final iteration of the artwork.

What is involved in participating?

Each participant will be asked to take part in a private, in-person discussion about their experiences of unsuccessful cycles using reproductive technologies.

Each participant is also encouraged to donate or loan any objects relating these cycles.
How will your privacy be protected?

All interviews will be conducted using voice capturing equipment. All recordings will be used exclusively by me.

The names and all identifying information will be safeguarded from public view. An alphanumeric coded system will be used in order to identify participants; this system requires that the names and corresponding numbers are not kept in the same file, and the key for the code be kept in a separate protected file.

What will the exhibition look like?

The exhibition will be comprised of two artworks.

The first will be an audio work based on private, in-person discussions with the participants. The second will take the form of a display including any objects offered by the participants.
Where can I get more information?

Please email me at info@heidibarkun.com and put LGYP in the subject line. I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Thanks so much for your consideration!
